Why do we? Relaxation

A little look at why we do, what we do

At the end of our yoga session we always spend at least a few minutes lying in relaxation where we are asked to get comfortable, close down our eyes, be still and focus on our breathing. For many it is the highlight of the whole session whilst others find the stillness a real challenge and maybe feel like it is something to be endured .. or even worse – skipped! Stick with the programme people! .. there are very sound principles behind our savasana.

The importance of relaxation…
Relaxation/savasana is a fantastic opportunity to reflect and notice what is happening in our bodies (something that we can struggle to do in the course of a normal day) but this important tool can also be used off the yoga mat as a ‘force quit’ on a busy mind and a ‘jangly’ body.

The science bit ..
When we lie in relaxation we are looking to trigger a physiological response in the body .. our parasympathetic nervous system is activated and our so-called ‘rest & digest’ setting kicks in. This is a state where the body switches over from the need to be alert and ready for action, to one of calmness where the body can repair and regroup. Once in this state it is much easier to calm a busy mind that just loves to create “little stories” and not allow us to be at peace.

‘Rest & Digest’ is initiated by calm, deep, slow breathing.

How to do it ..
1. In order to settle the breath we must first bring the body to stillness.
2. Once still, bring attention to your breathing – notice the depth of it, the quality of it, the parts of the body you can feel your breath reaching. Gradually the breath will lengthen and settle, and the act of paying attention to your breathing will help to settle your mind.
3. Once the breath is settled, chemicals in the brain are released that allow us to relax and unwind. Stay and enjoy this time you have created for yourself.
